Attica Zoo Park

 

The Attica Zoological Park is the only zoo in Greece, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors of all ages, every year, from all over the country.

 

The Attica Zoological Park was initially founded as a bird park in May 2000, hosting the world’s third largest collection of birds (1,100 birds from 300 different species). Striving to combine entertainment with education, it now offers visitors a unique journey to the five continents, through the lives of more than 1800 animals from 300 species, such as lions, Asian elephants, giraffes, monkeys, bears, penguins, parrots, dolphins and many more, in an area of over 20 hectares.

 

While zoos are a place for entertainment and relaxation, central to the philosophy of Attica Zoological Park is an effort not only to entertain, but also to educate our visitors. Raising public awareness of the animal kingdom, as well preserving and breeding endangered species - some 30% of the park animals are rare or threatened by extinction - are among our main objectives. Our pursuit is to be, first and foremost, a place of education and conservation.

 

In this context, the Park hosts educational programmes for students and offers guided tours to school groups. Every year, more than 75,000 students from all over Greece visit the park’s facilities, to see up close our 300 species or to take part in the 15 educational programmes specially designed for Greek schools.

 

The Park is a member of EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) and of EAMM (European Association of Marine Mammals) and, as such, conforms to strict guidelines regarding animal husbandry, conservation, education and security.

 

In cooperation with ΕΑΖΑ, the Attica Zoological Park actively participates in 31 European Endangered Species Programs (EEPs), and 37 species are monitored and checked through a European Studbook (ΕSB). Since early 2004, the Park has been using the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), where all data from ΕΑΖΑ and WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquaria) members are registered. Through this system we have access to valuable information in areas such as breeding, veterinary care and animal behaviour.

 

It is worth noting that AZP is a bright example of a private initiative, as its growth was based on self-sustained efforts, without any state funding. Future plans include the opening of “Dinosavropolis”, an evolution of species museum with an emphasis on the Age of the Dinosaurs, as well as “Okeanopolis”, an aquarium of international stature that will make Attica Zoological Park one of the largest thematic park for the protection of biodiversity.
